Manifestations of ‘bendable’ screens have consistently been a technology show staple ever since screens became small enough to be carried around. Samsung, in September, gave the strongest signal yet that the hi-tech gadgets may become reality. In January 2011, the company unveiled ‘bendable’ AMOLED screens which are 0.3mm thick and 4.5 inches across. The phones can also be rolled up and endure blows from a hammer.
Recent reports suggest that Samsung Galaxy Skin release date will be sometime during the second quarter of 2012.
The technology is reliant on sheets of carbon atoms and atom-thick layers of ‘graphene,’ which combine to form a protective layer for the liquid crystal ‘screen’. Studies undertaken by Columbia University scientists have indicated that ‘graphene’ is the most durable material in the world, with about 200 times the strength of structural steel.
Earlier in the year, leaked reports suggest that Samsung had the capability to produce large quantities of the screen by the second quarter of 2012 but no one was aware of what purpose they would serve.
Sometime later, images emerged of the Galaxy Skin, a concept phone using the AMOLED technology. Skin was a project undertaken by design students utilizing the Galaxy trademark and Samsung logo. But the possibilities of the technology are massive. Phones utilizing graphene screens would be virtually unbreakable, and provide an immediate advantage over every existing smartphone.
The International Business Times reports that handsets that are comparable to the concept of the Galaxy Skin could go on sale in early 2012. The report was extremely detailed, stating that the handset would feature specifications including a 1.2GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, eight megapixel camera and high-resolution 800×480 AMOLED screen that is flexible.
The specifications sound suspiciously comparable to the specifications of the Samsung Galaxy S II. However, Samsung is yet to make an official statement concerning the product. While Samsung can definitely manufacture the technology, as they demonstrated at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2011, there is a huge gap between the demonstration and the mass production of a working phone.
Since 2004, demonstrations of flexible screens have been carried out in various forms. There are even suggestions from technology insiders that e-Book readers or laptops may one day take the shape of a ‘pen’ accommodating a processor wrapped around with a ‘sheet’ of screen that is paper-like.
